Persuasion is somewhat an essential aspect in all/most communications. I rely on it mostly to get my message/point across to a particular individual audience.
However I must admit that at times, I feel that this aspect has a negative side to it, is one which could lead to disagreements or conflicts which could lead to further aggravation to the problem.
This negative side is what I like to call “Lack of Compromise” which leads to a breakdown in communication at times when either parties disagree to one another’s opinions or either one of the party is being too selfish.
I tend to avoid having such conversations at times because I also believe that if an individual is capable and resourceful, he does not have to persuade every time to get the things he needs.
Persuasion is catagorised into three main aspects/methods,
- Ethos (Appealing to a person’s ethics)
- Pathos (Appealing to an audience emotions)
- Logos (Appealing logically)
- Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, is a branch of philosophy that addresses questions about morality—that is, concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice, etc. A person’s ethics is based upon his moral philosophy and how his perception is determined from his believes.
- Pathos or Audience emotions is crucial when persuasion as we need to take note before engaging in communicating with the other party. Misjudgment or ignorance could lead to problems or could complicate existing ones.
- Logic is the study of the principles of valid inference and correct reasoning. It examines general forms which arguments may take place, which forms are valid, and which are fallacies. An individual must take note of what he wants to convey to his audiences, whether they sound logically or not, could affect the effectiveness of the communication or lead to miscommunication which is paramount to the situation.
